I started out photographing life on the streets in the Historic Core District of Downtown Los Angeles in October 2015. I fell in love with the neighborhood. It was endlessly fascinating, and although i really wanted to take pictures in Skid Row it took about 9 months of steady work before I was able to gain the trust of the residents, and learn how to work in the area with a camera. I’ve made many pictures there, and many of them are a harsh reality that are hard to view at times. But I believe that reality is the key to great documentary/street photography and no matter what, the realities and the juxtaposed elements i find in the places I explore are what I focus on and I make an effort to create a photograph that has meaning to me. I believe that too many popular images are lacking in the truthful reality of our times, and I work toward creating a body of work that reflects our times accurately as opposed to pleasantries aimed at pleasing the viewer.
